Undergraduate Workshop - 2023

Come explore the intersection where mathematics meets biology!

The Southeast Center for Mathematics and Biology at Georgia Tech is pleased to announce our 2023 Summer Undergraduate Workshop, July 31- August 4, entitled "Cell to Datum: How We Interpret Biological Structures Using Mathematics".

Our workshop is open to anyone who will be an undergraduate student in the United States for the 2023-2024 school year. We encourage applications from students who have a background in mathematics or biology, and are interested in learning about interdisciplinary approaches that combine the two.

The theme for our workshop concerns how biological processes and structures are modeled and analyzed using mathematics. Concrete examples of this include modeling cell signaling interactions using an agent-based model, describing a metabolic pathway in a cell using Boolean functions, and using topological data analysis to identify tissue and organ structure. Our focus is on understanding which mathematical tools are appropriate for which biological situation.

Participants will spend a week at Georgia Tech learning about topics in which this question applies, as well as more generally developing skills needed for an interdisciplinary approach combining biology and mathematics.

Each of the five days will be broken into lectures on specific topics, as well as activities based on those topics. We will also host panels and discussions about building a career in the field of mathematical biology, as well as exposure to current collaborative work.

Applicants should submit a transcript detailing their relevant classes in mathematics and biology.

Applicants should also submit one letter of recommendation, as well as a personal statement detailing their subject background and their interest in the workshop. Priority will be given to applicants who submit before April 21, 2023. Apply through the mathprograms.org website.

Housing will be provided by the center, along with a stipend for meals and travel reimbursements.
